Campus History

Historical Roots and Early Spirit (1962)

The establishment of Muhammadiyah University of Cirebon (UMC) is inseparable from the idealism, commitment, and spirit of charitable deeds of Cirebon Muhammadiyah members in improving the quality of life and education of the community. The initial idea to establish a Muhammadiyah Higher Education Institution (PTM) in Cirebon was actually conceived in 1962 through the opening of FKIP Law and FKIP Economics. However, due to the limitations of available human resources at that time, the educational program could not be continued.

The Rise of Ideas (1996-1999)

The spirit that had settled eventually found its momentum again at the Regional Deliberations (Musyda) of Muhammadiyah for Cirebon City/Regency, held on July 6, 1996. The Musyda mandated the establishment of higher education institutions in stages. This concrete step was realized with the establishment of AKPER Muhammadiyah in 1998, followed by the Muhammadiyah Pharmacy Academy in 1999. During this period, the Muhammadiyah Textile Technology School (STT) also existed for a short time.

Establishment and Inauguration (1999 – 2000)

The UMC's historical turning point occurred at the PDM City/Regency Cirebon Leadership Meeting on December 8, 1999, which officially agreed to establish an integrated university. As a follow-up, the UMC Founding Body was formed to consolidate, conduct comparative studies, and prepare all bureaucratic requirements. Through a long process of struggle at Kopertis Region IV and the Directorate General of Higher Education, this hard work finally received widespread support.

After receiving approval from the Central Leadership of Muhammadiyah through the Dikti Assembly, the establishment of UMC was proclaimed on August 12, 2000, by opening 8 study programs for Diploma III (D-III) and Bachelor's (S1) levels. The legality of this institution was later validated by the government through Decree of the Minister of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia No. 203/D/O/2000 dated September 28, 2000, which is now celebrated as the official founding day of Universitas Muhammadiyah Cirebon.
